Description
Since our beginnings in 1910, Swedish has been the region's standard-bearer for the highest-quality health care at the best value.
Swedish is the largest nonprofit health care provider in the greater Seattle area with five hospital campuses: First Hill, Cherry Hill, Ballard, Edmonds and Issaquah. We also have ambulatory care centers in Redmond and Mill Creek, and a network of more than 100 primary care and specialty clinics throughout the greater Puget Sound area.
Swedish’s innovative care has made it a regional referral center for leading-edge procedures such as robotic-assisted surgery and personalized treatment in cardiovascular care, cancer care, neuroscience, orthopedics, high-risk obstetrics, pediatric specialties, organ transplantation and clinical research.
Swedish is affiliated with Providence St. Joseph Health, a Catholic, not-for-profit organization founded by the Sisters of Providence in 1856. With more than 76,000 employees, Providence operates 34 hospitals and 475 physician clinics across five states. Based in Renton, Washington, Providence also provides strategic and management services to integrated health-care systems in Alaska, California, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, and Washington.

This year, Swedish Medical Center is offering one mental health-focused placement between its Issaquah and Ballard campuses covering the emergency department. As part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team in a dynamic and fast-paced setting, the MSW intern will provide bio-psychosocial assessments for patients of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds; determine safety risks and obstacles to discharge; work to address those risks via therapeutic interventions; make resource referrals; and advocate for patients and families. ED (Emergency Department) social workers often provide behavioral health assessments and partner with psychiatrists, local crisis responders, and community mental health providers to care for individuals in acute mental health crisis. This placement is well suited to a student interested in behavioral health; discharge planning such as referring to skilled nursing facilities, home health, etc., is not emphasized in this placement.
