This practicum placement is with the School Social Worker (SW) at JAMS. The JAMS SW works closely with the multidisciplinary Student Support Team, focusing on students who need more intensive and individualized support, especially in areas of mental health, attendance and re-engagement, care coordination/advocacy, and access to resources. Internship activities will vary depending on interests of the student and needs of the school, and will be mostly micro/mezzo focused.
Micro
- Work with students and families to assess needs related to external resources (financial, legal, housing, immigration, health and mental healthcare, etc.) and school-based supports; find and connect family to relevant supports.
- Lead check-ins with students about a variety of subjects including academics, attendance, social-emotional issues and bullying, etc., using basic social work direct practice skills.
- Conduct Student Attendance Assessments with students who are chronically absent to assess needs and barriers, work with SW to support.
- BASW won't be able to provide direct mental health counselling, but may observe SW's individual counselling sessions, crisis intervention, or other mental health support with permission of the student.
Mezzo
- Co-facilitating small groups (previous examples include coping skills group, navigating conflict)
- Opportunities to work with JAMS SW to improve schoolwide systems and create schoolwide interventions.
- Depending on scheduling, might have the option to participate in: MTSS attendance meetings, MTSS academics/behavior meetings, Student Support Team meetings, and staff meetings/professional development.
- Can participate in and/or lead efforts to engage with local community agencies such as Akin/NSFRC, Lake City Library, and FamilyWorks.
- Opportunities to collaborate with (possibly shadow) interdisciplinary school professionals including school counselors, prevention interventionist, administration, special education, Native Ed, etc.
Macro
- Opportunities to research policy topics of interest that are relevant to the school, and share knowledge with staff.
- Opportunities to observe JAMS SEA (Seattle Education Association union) meetings and speak with SEA reps at JAMS.
- Opportunities to talk with various roles at JAMS about how policies, funding and current events impact Seattle Public Schools and its students.
Required Experience
No prior experience required. What is necessary is a passion for working with youth or in schools, integrity and professionalism (if you say you'll get back to a family by Thursday, you do; if you don't know something, you don't make an answer up), and curiosity.
Required/Preferred Languages
While there are no language requirements, fluency or even basic proficiency in another language is a huge asset, especially Spanish.
