Description

The Protection Order Advocacy Program (POAP) is a program dedicated to providing in-depth, comprehensive support to petitioners filing civil domestic violence protection orders (DVPO's) at all stages of the process- this program is unique in Washington State, and even in the country. Our program consists of a team of advocates and legal navigator to help triage and guide individuals through the civil protection order process. Our team also assists connecting petitioners with other community, civil legal aid, and systems-based resources.

Micro

Working 1:1 with survivors of domestic violence, assisting survivors obtain civil protection orders, attending court proceedings, educating survivors of court practices and victim rights, engaging in trauma informed safety planning

Mezzo

Engaging other agencies in providing holistic, continued support to survivors such as community DV agencies, civil legal aid agencies, interpreter services, other systems-based advocates. Assisting on projects aimed at improving program accessibility and increasing educational opportunities to community and other system-based partners

Macro

Receiving training on evidence-based practices for working with survivors of domestic violence. Gaining insight into policy development, implementation and practice at nation, state and local levels

Required Experience

We are open to students who are interested in the intersection of social work and legal practice. We would prefer students with a particular interest in working with survivors of domestic violence through a trauma-informed approach.
