Climate Action Families (CAF) is a Seattle-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We empower an intergenerational climate justice movement of youth, families, and friends to build collective power that protects the people and planet at the speed and scale that climate science and climate justice require. 

In Seattle, we lead campaigns, actions, and events and support those of our partner groups, locally and regionally. We provide ongoing Climate Justice Training and resources for youth and families. Our work includes mentoring and directly supporting youth advocacy in relevant policies, campaigns, and actions. We are especially busy during legislative sessions and growing our youth, climate justice curriculum, and programming. 

We cultivate community resilience with monthly meetings, shared action, and group activities like hikes, ecological restoration, picnics, and other outdoor experiences that connect families to the awe and wonder of our natural world and traditional knowledge. Young people from our program have led 10,000-person strikes, started international organizations, sued our federal and state governments for climate justice, and are fundamentally positive, empathetic, driven, and kind people. Help us spread this work to more young people as quickly as possible!

Work closely with staff and volunteers to develop and support CAF programming - trainings, community gatherings, and events. Support workgroups and identify opportunities for team efficacy and resilience. Conduct one-on-ones with volunteers, support onboarding, educate and empower youth and volunteers to be confident contributors, and provide mentorship and organizing support to youth leaders at CAF and partner organizations.

Develop multi-age curriculums based on our pillars and theories of change. Manage outreach to schools and community organizations to grow CAF’s capacity to provide quarterly Climate Justice Training series in Seattle and beyond. Take the lead in creating and facilitating youth programming grounded in principles of climate justice, community resilience, and youth mental health. Support organizing CAF monthly events, outdoor experiences, educational opportunities, legislative participation, and actions. Contribute to ongoing program development in volunteer onboarding, community outreach, campaign development, and coalition building.

Grow CAF’s capacity as a community resource for youth and families acting in the climate justice movement. Look for opportunities to expand educational offerings through institutions and partner groups. Grow understanding around local, state, and federal climate policy and identify opportunities for strategic engagement. Work within campaigns to empower youth voices in advocating for the passage of socially just climate policy locally and at the state level. Help evolve the organization’s central pillars to influence the organization's culture and direction.

This is a chance to support youth and families during one of the most challenging periods in history and have a tangible impact on our global climate and environmental justice. Applicants should be excited about engaging with youth, parents, and our larger CAF community as an organizer and program developer. You must be ready to collaborate with partner organizations and be driven to learn, experiment, and create a uniquely effective pathway for youth engagement.

Onboarding includes working with staff and volunteers to understand CAF’s mission and framework, climate justice theory, and best practices and reviewing relevant resources for supporting healthy, safe spaces for youth. Students should expect to spend part of their first quarter understanding CAF’s working teams, ongoing campaigns, curriculum development, and regular events with the invitation to provide insight and innovation to program development.

Students should be comfortable working independently, taking on multiple projects with clear or ambiguous deliverables, and responsible for regular reporting. Some community organizing is preferred, but self-motivated, energetic applicants willing to learn are welcome! The more engaged you are, the more incredible the progress and outcomes will be! We have already changed the world and welcome collaborators ready to see rapid change, too!
