Micro
At the micro level, the Evergreen Recovery Centers’ manor Residential Treatment for Pregnant and Parenting Women provides MSW interns with the opportunity to engage directly with clients in a residential treatment setting. Interns will work closely with pregnant and parenting women and their young children, delivering individual counseling, dyadic therapy, and group interventions. Through these hands-on experiences, interns will develop core clinical skills including biopsychosocial assessment, treatment planning, and therapeutic engagement. Interns will be supported by licensed clinician who offer supervision and mentorship, helping students grow in their understanding of trauma-informed care, substance use recovery, and maternal mental health.
Interns will also have the opportunity to work with the Infant Mental Health specialist which emphasizes nurturing early parent-child attachment and promoting developmental growth. Students will engage in therapeutic activities that support bonding, positive parenting practices, and the social-emotional development of young children. The micro-level placement fosters strong client relationships and provides rich learning experiences in clinical documentation, cultural responsiveness, and strengths-based intervention—equipping students with the skills needed for advanced practice in family-centered behavioral health settings.
Mezzo
At the macro level, MSW students placed at Evergreen Recovery Centers' Pregnant and Parenting Women’s Program will gain exposure to systems-level practices that influence policy and program development for families involved with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). Given that approximately 95% of the women in the program have active child welfare cases, interns will have the opportunity to understand and engage with interdisciplinary systems, including family court, child protective services, and behavioral health networks. Interns will learn how to advocate for systemic change, support client navigation of complex bureaucracies, and participate in collaborative case coordination meetings. Additionally, they may contribute to program evaluations, data collection, and outcome reporting that informs funding decisions and service improvements for high-risk families.
Students will also develop skills in identifying systemic barriers that impact parenting women with substance use and mental health challenges, including the role of structural racism, poverty, housing instability, and stigma. Under the guidance of seasoned social workers, interns will explore macro-level approaches to trauma-informed and culturally responsive care, particularly in relation to maternal and child well-being. They may assist in the development or refinement of program policies, contribute to community outreach initiatives, and engage with advocacy efforts that aim to shift public perception and influence child welfare reform. This macro perspective complements the intensive clinical training interns receive, preparing them to become holistic and equity-focused practitioners.
