Description

The Department of Health and Community Studies seeks MSW interns for the position of Guidance and Career Counselor for their Human Services Program. The role of the Guidance and Career Counselor is to to support Bellingham students (Whatcom and Skagit Counties) in getting connected for internships, board opportunities, and career opportunities. The Counselor is also responsible for supporting outreach activities by engaging social services agencies (internship placement sites) through dialogue, events, and internship support for students in the Human Services -Bellingham program. We aim for the Guidance Counselor role to support and engage human services students through dialogue, consultation, mentorship, events, and social support that empowers their self-determination and professional development.

 

Micro

Serving as an embedded therapist for the Bellingham Human Services Program
Individual sessions with HS students
- answering questions concerning required classes
- assistance with resume development, cover letters
- interview preparation
- problem solving, general career counseling
- coaching, assisting interventions
- providing mentorship and encouragement

Mezzo

- Visiting Bellingham-based human services classes
- Care coordination - referral to WWU counseling when necessary
- Outreach: Connecting with potential internship placement sites
- Tabling special events: Internship Fair days, WWU Mental Health Awareness Day, and others
- Work with and support AmeriCorps Bellingham students in their sense of belonging/ambassador and academic work individually and with the team (currently 4 Bellingham students) and team building
- Integrate and create team building and professional development workshops for the Sense of Belonging/Ambassadors team in collaboration with interns and Academic Program Director.
- Work with the Academic Program Director on virtual presentations and in-person presentations about the internship program for Bellingham

Macro

Work with the Academic Program Director to identify areas of assessment related to community outreach, student experiences in the program, towards understanding more about community partner relationships, and recruitment and retention of HSP students and faculty in the Bellingham campus.

Required Experience

Some mentorship and counseling experience preferred.
Familiarity with college academic environment.

Required/Preferred Languages

Bilingual Spanish preferred but not required.
