Description
Seattle Children's is a pediatric hospital serving infants through young adults. This practicum placement will be primarily split between work in the Emergency Department (ED) and the Safe Child and Adolescent Network (which is the hospital’s child abuse team). There will also be some work included with the Inpatient After Hours Social Work team. This role will provide students with the opportunity to engage in crisis interventions for children, youth, and families in the hospital setting. Examples of crisis interventions include assessing and addressing concerns for child abuse and neglect, sexual assault/abuse, interpersonal violence, commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC), as well as supporting families during medical codes and end of life. Students will have the opportunity to partner closely with other disciplines in the hospital. This role will require close collaboration with community systems including DCYF/CPS, Law Enforcement (LE), and other Child Advocacy Center (CAC) team members. This role can provide a fast-paced environment which will support students in learning how to best prioritize tasks based on acuity. In addition, this role provides the opportunity to work within various settings throughout the hospital. This role will have a primary focus on cases at the hospital in which there is a concern for potential child abuse that requires mandated reporting to CPS and/or LE. There will be ongoing communication and collaboration with medical providers, hospital social workers, and community agencies such CPS and LE, to ensure there are safe plans in place for children treated at Seattle Children’s. This is a great opportunity for a student who is interested in the child welfare field in a medical setting. The hours for this practicum are anticipated to be 11am-7:30pm, though there may be some flexibility.
