Master of Social Work Practicum Placement

Site: Evergreen Recovery Centers – Grand Outpatient Program for Adults
Location: Everett, WA
Program: Co-Occurring Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders

About the Program:

The Grand Outpatient Program at Evergreen Recovery Centers provides comprehensive, trauma-informed, and client-centered care for adults experiencing substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. Rooted in a healing-centered engagement model, our program is designed to promote emotional stability, recovery, and long-term well-being. We serve a diverse adult population and utilize evidence-based practices within an outpatient clinical setting.

About the Internship Placement:

Evergreen Recovery Centers is seeking passionate and dedicated Master of Social Work (MSW) students who are committed to working with individuals impacted by trauma, addiction, and mental health challenges. This practicum offers a dynamic and supportive environment for students to build foundational and advanced clinical competencies under the supervision of licensed professionals.

Interns will work with a small caseload of adult clients, participating in:

  • Individual therapy

  • Group facilitation

  • Dyadic counseling sessions

Students will engage in reflective supervision, interdisciplinary collaboration, and have access to ongoing professional development and training opportunities in integrated behavioral health care.

Key Learning Opportunities:

  • Gain direct experience with assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning for clients with co-occurring disorders.

  • Develop skills in motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, and harm reduction strategies.

  • Participate in facilitating group therapy and co-facilitating psychoeducation sessions.

  • Learn documentation and case management skills using clinical electronic health records.

  • Experience collaborative work with multidisciplinary teams, including case managers, peer support, nursing, and psychiatric providers.

  • Build professional identity as a social worker through structured supervision and mentorship.

Micro

Micro-Level Social Work Description – Grand Outpatient Program

At the micro level, social work practice at the Grand Outpatient Program focuses on direct clinical engagement with individuals experiencing substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health challenges. The MSW intern will provide trauma-informed, person-centered care through individual, group, and dyadic counseling, addressing clients’ immediate needs, emotional well-being, and treatment goals.

Interns will conduct biopsychosocial assessments, assist in developing and updating individualized treatment plans, and support clients in building coping strategies, emotional regulation skills, and relapse prevention tools. Through one-on-one therapeutic relationships, interns will have the opportunity to engage with clients from diverse backgrounds, providing culturally responsive care grounded in empathy, respect, and clinical best practices.

In this micro-level role, the MSW intern will:

Build rapport and maintain therapeutic alliances with assigned clients

Apply evidence-based interventions such as CBT, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness techniques

Document clinical interactions using appropriate diagnostic and progress note formats

Coordinate care and advocate for client needs in collaboration with case managers, peer support specialists, and external service providers

Receive individual and group supervision to strengthen reflective practice and clinical growth

Mezzo

Mezzo-Level Social Work Description – Grand Outpatient Program

At the mezzo level, social work practice at the Grand Outpatient Program emphasizes working with groups, families, and interdisciplinary teams to support client recovery and wellness. MSW interns will have the opportunity to facilitate and co-facilitate therapeutic groups, psychoeducation sessions, and family-inclusive interventions designed to build community, reduce isolation, and strengthen support systems for clients navigating substance use and mental health challenges.

Interns will engage in collaborative team meetings with counselors, case coordinators, medical providers, and court facilitators to review client progress and contribute to treatment planning. They will also explore how policies, group norms, and organizational culture influence client outcomes and engagement. Through this process, interns will develop an understanding of systems coordination, team-based care, and how to navigate conflict and communication across disciplines.

Key mezzo-level learning experiences include:

Co-leading structured treatment and support groups using evidence-based curricula

Participating in staff meetings, case consultations, MH team huddles.

Assisting in the development and evaluation of group programming to meet emerging client needs

Engaging with family systems and supporting family involvement in recovery when appropriate

Practicing interdisciplinary communication and documentation to ensure continuity of care

Required Experience

Currently enrolled in a Master of Social Work (MSW) program.

Strong interest in clinical social work and working with co-occurring disorders for adults.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work effectively in a team and independently.

Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards.

Previous experience in a clinical or residential setting is preferred but not required.
