Description

Harborview Medical Center (HMC) is the region's only Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center. Patients are referred to Harborview from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho for treatment for trauma, burns, complex orthopedic injuries, neurosurgical interventions, HIV/AIDS, sexual assault, mental health services and other specialty treatments. The medical center also is home to more than 50 primary, specialty and sub-specialty clinics. Harborview is owned by the residents of King County, governed by a board of trustees appointed by the King County Council, and managed by the University of Washington and is licensed for 413 beds.

The UW Medicine Long COVID Clinic is part of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine within the School of Medicine. This clinic has a unique structure, with 4 part time satellite clinics across the UW Medicine system including Primary Care, Adult Medicine, and Rehabilitation Medicine. As part of our collaboration with the AHRQ’s Long COVID Network, we are expanding our program offerings to include patient navigation, care coordination support, and resource development to support Long COVID patients. Furthermore, the Long COVID clinic strives to expand community outreach efforts and care availability to historically underserved and marginalized communities such as Latinos, the LGBTQ community, SE Asian communities, and rural populations. This practicum placement is a hybrid opportunity, with some in-person meetings inside HMC’s Ninth and Jefferson Building.

Micro

This practicum placement provides learning opportunities in all three levels of social work practice and can be tailored to meet the academic and professional goals of the student. Micro practice opportunity examples include administering social work assessments and providing patient navigation services to patients. Advanced students will also have the opportunity to shadow a symptom self-management group intervention led by a Rehabilitation Psychologist for clinic patients with the potential opportunity to learn how to deliver the intervention based on interest and experience.

This practicum placement would be an excellent opportunity for a student who is interested in studying under a public health social worker (MSW/MPH) and has interest in program management and development within a clinical setting. Please indicate this as an interest in your cover letter if applicable.

Mezzo

Macro and mezzo level social work practice opportunities include working amongst a multidisciplinary medical team, supporting Long COVID education and training efforts, shadowing and assisting administrative social work efforts at the national, state and regional level, community outreach, patient advocacy, resource creation, and care navigation. Students will learn about the unique care and social service needs of Long COVID patients, a cutting-edge area of medicine
