Description

A Social Work internship at Northwest is a dynamic placement with the goal of preparing practicum MSW interns for employment in the acute care hospital setting. Interns will work on a fast-paced inpatient unit with patients and families who are admitted to Medical or Psychiatric Service, or the Emergency Department with patients and families who are seeking medical and psychiatric care. Interns will be most successful at Northwest will have experience working collaboratively in a complex, high demand, multidisciplinary health, or behavioral health care environment. The intern will participate in multi-disciplinary treatment rounds and should be comfortable with adjustment to illness, family conflict, grief and loss, end of life, psychiatric diagnoses, substance use, and adult protection concerns in a critical care setting. Strong psychosocial assessment skills, excellent communication skills, and succinct written and verbal communication skills are essential.

We are seeking students with strong critical thinking skills and developed self-awareness. Students with a desire to learn more about Health Equity and Social Justice are welcomed. Strong candidates will have a commitment to work with patients with the unique challenges and demands of a wide range of medical and psychiatric diagnoses. Placement will offer training in psychosocial assessments, adjustment to illness, crisis intervention, psychosocial support, substance use screening, resource coordination, grief and loss, end of life, making referrals to placement facilities and coordination of each patient’s discharge plan.

Student Roles and Responsibilities Include: Psychosocial assessment, discharge planning, participation in care conferences, working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary treatment team, providing emotional support to patients and families, making referrals to and collaborating with outside agencies. Towards the end of the placement, students will have the opportunity on placement days to shadow service areas outside their internship.

Submissions will be reviewed, and phone screens will be scheduled as resumes come in throughout the month of February with the plan to schedule interviews March 3rd and 4th, with the intention to send out offers by end of day on March 7th.
