Micro
The University of Washington Kidney Transplant Program is the most experienced kidney/pancreas transplant team in the region and has performed over 3,000 transplants since 1968 - the most combined kidney/pancreas transplants in the Northwest. We hold a five-tier rating by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) and 95 percent of our kidney recipients have a working kidney after three years. Patients looking into transplant, or post-transplant treatment, have access to research studies focusing on new medications to prevent the rejection of transplanted kidneys. Combined with a specialized post-transplant infectious disease team and a wellness program, UW Medicine is dedicated to patients' well-being post-transplant.
The social worker is responsible for providing a full range of social work services including psychosocial assessment, treatment planning, therapeutic interventions, discharge planning, crisis intervention and resource referral(s). Learning opportunities and responsibilities will include:
How to conduct a comprehensive psychosocial assessment, specific to determining an individual’s capacity to receive or donate an organ.
Gain an understanding of the psychosocial risks and benefits of the transplant procedure.
Learn how to identify, assess, and develop interventions for mental health and chemical dependency concerns.
Become adept at navigating community resources and funding possibilities for transplant patients.
Students will also learn how SW Ethics play a vital role in the transplant process.
Students will participate in care conferences, selection committees and working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary treatment team, as well as providing emotional support to patients and families, and making referrals to and collaborating with outside agencies.

Required Experience
We are seeking students with strong critical thinking skills and developed self-awareness. Interns should bring direct service experience and/if possible, experience working collaboratively in a complex, high demand, multidisciplinary health, or behavioral health care environment.
Required/Preferred Languages
English required.
Any second language preferred but not required.
