Highline Public Schools is a diverse and vibrant school district covering the communities of Burien, Seatac, Des Moines, White Center, and Normandy Park. We serve over 17,000 students in K-12 across 34 schools and programs. The Mental Health and Social Services Department is comprised of school social workers, SBIRT Coordinators, and McKinney-Vento/504 liaisons. The MSW direct-service internship (3 students) is designed to pair with school social workers who support students and families in multiple schools, and will have opportunities to shadow/interview others in the MH/SS department and participate in department meetings and is a good placement for clinical/CCIP students. The MSW administrative internship (1 student) is an opportunity to be placed at an administrative level with the director of the MH/SS department completing projects, evaluating processes, understanding the district-level functions of a school district, and is a good placement for admin & policy practice/CCIP students.

Activities Interns Can Expect at Highline Public Schools:
· One-on-one student check-ins, counseling*, and social-emotional support
· Case management
· Resource allocation for mental health and community supports
· MTSS and Tier 3 collaboration· Crisis intervention
· Classroom lessons
· Small groups
· Focuses on social skills, friendship support, bullying prevention and intervention, personal safety, and problem solving, mental health, and prevention
· Staff collaboration meeting, and professional development with school staff
· Applying a racial equity lens throughout our work
· Navigating Highline Public Schools’ system and resources

· Opportunities to deliver school-wide social emotional interventions
· Join student intervention meetings, monitor interventions
· Join school-wide committee opportunities (MTSS, Racial Equity Teams)
· Opportunities to deliver and facilitate staff PD
· Discuss similarities and differences between SSW and other ESA positions

· Learn how school systems are impacted by policies (Becca Law, McKinney Vento, Mandatory reporting)
· Through supervision, discuss racial equity and how white supremacy impacts students and families
· Discuss the role of school social worker as defined by SSWAA.org, OSPI as well as HPS
· Discuss variable ways to take action through WASSW
· Learn how unions and school districts operate alongside one another
· Partner with other educators on site
· Parent contact and engagement

Preferred experience, but not required:
Child development and learning styles
Group facilitation for children and adults
Community resources and resource mapping
Racial equity work
Experience working with diverse populations

Not required, but helpful to note that Highline Public Schools serves very diverse and multilingual populations. English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali and Amharic are the 5 most common languages in the district, but over 90 languages are present.
