The City of Seattle’s Municipal Court is one of the highest volume Courts of Limited Jurisdiction in the state with seven elected Judges, six appointed Magistrates, and over 200 staff. The Court adjudicates all misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor crimes, infractions, and civil violations authorized under the Seattle Municipal Code and certain Revised Code of Washington Statutes.

The Research, Planning and Evaluation Group (RPEG) works within the court to provide data and research feedback, policy recommendations, and facilitate program and organizational improvement.

POTENTIAL TASK OPPORTUNITIES:

Make initial engagement with individuals in need at the court or reporting for court programs and provide with information and assistance as needed.
Assess individuals to determine eligibility for public defender or reduction of infraction penalties, and work to improve process/system.

Develop and implement strategies to support the work of Therapeutic Courts and a Court Navigator/Resource Center Specialist
Collect, analyze and evaluate data on various projects relating to Therapeutic Courts and Pretrial Services
Work with supervisor to create and document processes, policies and procedures.

Observe program and organization and provide feedback on process and service improvement with a social work lens.

Seattle Municipal Court is seeking an MSW intern interested in client interaction, program analysis, evaluation and process improvement - focused on therapeutic court programs and pretrial services. This part-time intern supports the Court’s mission of providing a respectful, independent and impartial forum for resolving alleged violations of the law. This position would provide the student with an opportunity to learn about the intersection of social work and criminal justice policy and practice. The Student will learn how to implement a program design and evaluation from interaction with individuals, data analysis and recommended policy/practice changes. This position will report to a supervisor in the Research Planning and Evaluation Group at Seattle Municipal Court.

The ideal candidate will have client-based customer service experience; be comfortable interacting with both court clients and staff; collecting and analyzing data; and presenting the results through oral, visual and written communication methods; working independently under tight deadlines and high pressure; and establishing strong working relationships with court staff, judges, directors, city leadership, other internal/external agencies and the public.
