Brief Description of Program:
The Neuro Oncology/Medicine ICU Social Work internship is a stimulating placement with the goal of preparing practicum MSW interns for employment in the acute care setting. The MSW intern will work both on a fast paced inpatient unit with patients and families who are admitted to the Medical ICU and Medicine E service, as well as in The Alvord Brain Tumor Center (Neuro Oncology outpatient clinic). This placement focuses on a balance of both inpatient and outpatient direct clinical social work.
Interns should bring direct service experience and/or a strong interest in working collaboratively in a complex, high demand, multidisciplinary health care environment. The intern will participate in multi-disciplinary medical rounds and should be comfortable with adjustment to illness, family conflict, grief and loss, end of life, and adult protection related issues in a critical care setting. Strong psychosocial assessment skills, excellent communication skills, and succinct written communication skills are essential. We are seeking those who have a commitment to work with patients with the unique challenges and demands of Neuro Oncology patients, including TBI, stroke and brain tumors. Placement will offer training in psychosocial assessments, adjustment to illness, crisis intervention, psychosocial support, substance abuse screening, resource coordination, grief and loss, end of life, making referrals to outside home health and skilled nursing facilities and coordinating patient’s discharge plan.
Student Roles and Responsibilities Include:
Psychosocial assessment, discharge planning, participation in care conferences, working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary treatment team, providing emotional support to patients and families, making referrals to and collaborating with outside agencies.
