Harborview Mental Health and Addiction Services (HMHAS) is a community mental health center providing comprehensive services through a network of behavioral health services, including brief interventions and evidence-based treatment, substance use disorders and medication assisted treatment, recovery focused psychosocial rehabilitation, and clinical support services such as housing and employment. HMHAS utilizes a variety of treatment approaches with special emphasis on recovery focused case management within the framework of a medical model of treatment. HMHAS provides services to medically, economically, ethnically and racially diverse individuals across the continuum. Many have co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders that require thoughtful and individually tailored treatment strategies.

This placement is technically demanding. The position is ideal for an advanced MSW student seeking an intensive learning experience through full immersion into multiple levels of complex community mental health, substance use disorder, and peer support services.

The practicum student will work under the supervision of a seasoned mental health professional who is a clinician in both the Intake and Brief Intervention and the Addiction clinics at Harborview Mental Health & Addictions Services. At the start of this practicum, there will be a primary emphasis on understanding case management techniques as well as ancillary services such as dual diagnosis treatment, vocational, financial, and housing supports. The student will develop expertise in areas related to diagnosis, assessment, and treatment as well as a practical understanding of the systems for provision of public mental health, substance use disorder treatment systems, state and federal health care and life supports (e.g. SSI; SSDI; DSHS; HUD; SHA; Medicaid; Medicare; etc.). Students will participate in the Initial Brief Intervention Service toward the end of their placement as they develop advanced competencies in clinical assessment and treatment skills. Students will also have the opportunity to gain training and practice of specific evidence based brief therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBT-P), Common Elements Treatment Approach (CETA), Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Harm Reduction approaches, etc.
