Description

This placement is affiliated with the University of Washington School of Social Work Carol Lamare program.

This is a shared practicum placement with two days with the Leukemia/Lymphoma team and one day with the Cancer Survivorship social worker.  While more kids successfully complete their treatment, this still leaves a lot of uncertainty for patients and families.  The student will work as a member of the survivorship team as they learn to assess for late effects including needs around topics such as mental health, school, substance use and sexual health.

This placement will introduce students to the special needs of pediatric cancer patients and their families and will prepare candidates for direct clinical practice within a multidisciplinary team.

The goals of the program are to:

  • Educate social workers in knowledge and skills for oncology specialization.
  • Define explicit criteria for state-of-the-art oncology social work training programs.
  • Strengthen existing institutional training programs for oncology social workers.
  • Promote development of additional high quality training programs for oncology social workers.
  • Support programs that train oncology social workers to meet the needs diverse populations, including poor and medically underserved populations.
