Description

The clinic is an outpatient  hematology/oncology clinic located at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle. Patients come to the clinic to see the MDs and get treatment. We service patients with various cancers who come from different parts of WA and sometimes from Alaska and other nearby States. We service adults  ranging from 20-90 years old.

Social workers are part of the multi-disciplinary team and work alongside the doctors, nurses, MA's  and other support staff.

The intern will have 2 practicum instructors and will have a work space in the same office as the instructors.

 

Micro

This internship is more Micro focused.
The intern will have a chance to have a caseload and follow patients while they are receiving care at the clinic. The intern will provide planning and preparing for the experience of cancer treatment.
The intern can also provide individual and family emotional support and advance care planning.
The intern will have a chance to support patients during end of life and work with palliative care.
The intern will help patients get connected with quality of life resources
The intern will have an opportunity to provide caregiver support and resources.

Mezzo

The intern will have a chance to participate in support groups. The intern will also have the opportunity to connect and participate with various community programs. The intern will have a chance to provide resources and help patients navigate public benefits and insurance.
The intern will help patients navigate any social barriers to their care.

Macro

The intern will have an opportunity to do research and improve a process that may help the patient experience. The intern will have a chance to be involved in some of the education outreach and prevention programs.

Required Experience

The intern should be part of the Carol Lamar Program. The intern must be a second year student and preferably have some previous work experience.
The intern should feel comfortable talking about end of life planning. The intern should be a self starter and enjoy working in a collaborative setting.
