The UW Center for Health Sciences Interprofessional Education, Research and Practice 

The practicum student will be part of the coordinating body for Interprofessional Education (IPE) with the University of Washington Center for Health Sciences Interprofessional Education, Research, and Practice (CHSIE). CHSIE is dedicated to transforming health practice by furthering collaboration between students and faculty across health care professions.  Through building future health care professionals skills for collaboration, the Center aims to contribute to a healthcare system that is more patient-centered, safer, more cost-effective, and that provides a more nurturing and sustainable environment for healers and healthcare workers.  CHSIE programming includes curriculum development and service learning programming for students from across the health sciences (social work, public health, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry).   

This is an excellent practicum placement for an advanced year student who is interested in service learning, academic services, curriculum/program development, social work in healthcare/public health, and program evaluation.  The student who will thrive in this placement is one who is curious, compassionate, humble, energized by relationship building, collaborative, and motivated to take on new and diverse learning opportunities within the organization.

The student in this position will hold a range of responsibilities for curriculum development, community engagement and community services opportunities for health science students. Duties include:

Help manage, coordinate, schedule, and participate in Harborview Mobile Health Outreaches; aimed at providing bridge to care services for people experiencing houseless in Seattle/King County area

As a van driver/site lead at the outreaches facilitate the pre-brief and debrief of the outreaches with interprofessional groups of student volunteers

As a social work student volunteer at outreaches in the community, provide supportive listening and resource navigation for patients seeking services with the mobile health outreach program

The student in this position will hold a range of responsibilities for curriculum development, community engagement and community services opportunities for health science students. Duties include:

Support the development of interprofessional education (IPE) classroom-based curriculum and service-learning programming that helps build teamwork skills for health sciences students

Attend meetings with faculty/staff from various health science departments and other public health community stakeholders; provide feedback on curriculum and program development

Communicate directly with community partners on behalf of CHSIE and the service learning programs

Attend monthly Interprofessional Active Learning (IPALS) as a learner; these provide opportunities for students to learn and practice the core competencies of collaborative practice

Participate in program evaluation efforts

Present to stakeholders about the program and rally supporters and allies of IPE across the health sciences

There may be an opportunity to attend an interprofessional Lobby Day in Olympia as part of this practicum placement (depends on whether the event is being offered).

This practicum is designed for a 2nd year or advanced standing MSW students whose concentrations are Admin & Policy or Community Centered Integrated Practice.

This practicum is best suited for a student who is enthusiastic about the topic of interprofessional collaboration and curriculum/program development, and who is independently motivated and who also enjoys collaborating with others.
